From Us to You: Top 6 Podcasts of 2022

3 min read

It’s end-of-year roundup season, and what better way to top it off than with a list of our favorite podcasts. Podcasts, of course, are an excellent way for developers to stay current with changing trends and tools, learn from leading thought leaders and, perhaps, kick back and unwind during a busy holiday season.

Here are 6 of our favorite selections from the Styra team (several of which feature episodes with our own team members!). Whether you’re an avid podcast enthusiast or not, each of these entries provide plenty of rich fodder to help you charge into the new year with great new ideas.

With host Jon Mclachlan, the Security Podcast of Silicon Valley gives an open-ended 30 minutes for security professionals, founders, engineers and more to dive into their journeys of solving security challenges. While this is geared for security-minded folks, the podcast has something for everyone — including inspiring takes on leadership, lessons on life and the career paths of leading practitioners. Plus, some good old-fashioned technical deep dives. Overall, a very high-quality podcast.

Check out the episode with our own developer advocate Anders Eknert, as he jumps into his journey to find best practices in authorization.

This is a fun one. Want to immerse yourself in the hidden world of hackers, cybercrime, breaches and shadow government activity? Darknet Diaries has you covered. Their spread of topics is insanely wide, and it features the sort of high-quality production and storytelling that would get you hooked on, say, a leading true crime podcast. A representative example: a penetration tester robs the wrong bank by mistake. A suitable podcast for both work and leisure.

Software Engineering Daily is a staple. Covering a wide range of software engineering topics, from cloud deployments, to microservices, security and DevOps and frankly much more, Software Engineering Daily is just that — your daily listen. Come (and stay) for the expert advice from leading practitioners.

Plus, check out the episode on cloud-native authorization with CTO of Styra, Tim Hinrichs.

If you’re familiar with VICE, you know what you’re in for: lively, well-reported-if-offbeat stories on, as they call it, the “dark underbelly of the internet.” As with Darknet Diaries, this podcast is, primarily, for fun (you’re not going to learn how to enforce policy as code against infra-as-code plans). But that’s not to say Cyber don’t doesn’t cover important stories on timely tech issues. If you’re looking for an earworm over the holidays with an eccentric flair, this is it.

This podcast will likely be familiar to some, and its own description covers its contents well: “Day Two Cloud is what happens after you make the decision to adopt the public cloud and operational reality sinks in.” Given that one of the purposes of policy as code is to ensure that the “operational reality” of cloud deployments meet your operational expectations, this podcast is near and dear to us. We highly recommend it for its variety of in-depth discussions that grapple with the true complexities of the cloud.

Plus, Anders Eknert makes another guest appearance, on episode 145: “Using Open Policy Agent for Cloud-Native Policy Enforcement.”

Rounding off our list, Click Here follows former NPR investigations correspondent Dina Temple-Raston as she explores the world of cybercrime, ransomware and other facets of today’s top cyber and intelligence stories. The podcast features not only solid reporting on topics you might expect (like Supreme Court cases surrounding Section 230 and social platform liabilities), but also deep dives on lesser known but important stories, like the effort to save online historical resources in Ukraine

Thanks for listening! We hope these selections stead you well, as you head into the holidays and prep for 2023. Have podcast recommendations for us? Or want Styra team members to feature on your podcast? Be sure to drop us a line on LinkedIn or Twitter.
