Styra Announces New Online Academy for Open Policy Agent

New online portal provides exclusive OPA, Rego and Styra DAS training from the founders and maintainers of Open Policy Agent

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — August 17, 2020

Styra, Inc., the founders of Open Policy Agent (OPA) and leaders in cloud-native authorization, today announced the Styra Academy. This new online training portal is the definitive source for free, exclusive courses to learn about the OPA project, its Rego policy language and the Styra Declarative Authorization Service control plane for OPA. Styra Academy is launching today with an initial course focused on OPA Policy Authoring.

“As OPA has matured, and end-user deployments have increased, we saw the need to create a core set of training and curriculum, borne out of proven production examples from the community,” said Tim Hinrichs, co-creator of OPA and co-founder and chief technology officer of Styra. “The Styra Academy is a place where anyone can sign up for free to take advantage of the training and knowledge that has, until now, only been available at in-person events, trade shows, user groups or enterprise training sessions.”

Styra Academy first course – OPA Policy Authoring

The first course, OPA Policy Authoring in Rego, is broken into six subcourses, each of which can be completed in 30-45 minutes. Each course lays out OPA fundamentals from Tim Hinrichs, Styra CTO, co-founder of the Open Policy Agent project, and co-inventor of the Rego policy language. Students will be able to learn conceptual overviews, work through examples and take quizzes to validate their knowledge throughout the series. Examples of these initial concepts include:

  • Understanding basic Rego language concepts
  • Building your first Rego expressions
  • Structuring policy-as-code rules, and how Rego handles iteration through arrays objects and sets
