Styra Recognized as a Cool Vendor in the May 2021 Gartner Cool Vendors for Software Engineering Technologies

Gartner research highlights the importance of cloud-native authorization

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — May. 7, 2021

Styra, Inc., the founders of Open Policy Agent (OPA) and leaders in cloud-native authorization, today announced announced today that the company has been recognized as a Cool Vendor in the Gartner 2021 Cool Vendors for Software Engineering Technologies. This recognition builds on the momentum of both Styra and OPA, including OPA’s graduation in the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) in early 2021 and the company achieving 300% customer and commercial growth year-over-year.

According to the report, “The complexity of enabling authorization policies across disparate cloud-native environments, including for containers, microservices and modern application delivery infrastructure, is a challenge for software engineering teams.”

Indeed, authorization has to be solved differently for cloud-native apps, due to the exponentially more complex, containerized app development ecosystem. Modern cloud-native applications may now be composed of dozens of microservices, housed in containers and hosted on immutable, dynamically scaling platforms like Kubernetes.

Gartner recommends that software engineering leaders responsible for improving application delivery should, “Implement an open, declarative approach to application authorization to reduce the burden of security and compliance, which can be a roadblock to engineering teams.”

The company built OPA and Styra Declarative Authorization Service (DAS), the industry’s first and only OPA control plane, to address this challenge. With OPA, enterprise teams have a single, consistent way to implement authorization across all their Kubernetes deployments, microservices and APIs. Not only does this mean teams can learn a single paradigm, and then apply it everywhere to save time, it also means that new tools, services, APIs or infrastructure can all be more easily governed and secured.

Styra solutions let developers, DevOps and security teams mitigate risks, reduce human error and accelerate application development. The combination of OPA and Styra DAS ensures that authorization in today’s complex environments can be controlled and audited across teams, clusters and clouds.

“OPA and Styra have seen tremendous growth this past year and we believe that being recognized as a Cool Vendor by Gartner further solidifies the market need cloud-native authorization,” said Bill Mann, CEO of Styra. “We’re proud to be at the forefront of authorization innovation to help our community and customers meet the changing demands of cloud-based applications.”
